Aldara (imiquimod) is an immune response modifier used to treat several conditions:

• Actinic keratosis
• Superficial basal cell carcinoma
• Genital warts

Less commonly the medication may be used for other purposes, particularly treatment of other types of skin growths or tumors. Patients are not advised to buy Aldara to treat an undiagnosed condition; it will not be effective on many types of skin conditions and may produce severe side effects.

The medication works by stimulating the immune system's response to treated areas, encouraging the destruction of abnormal cells.

Actinic Keratosis

Actinic keratoses are scaly skin growths which can be unsightly and, in a small percentage of cases, may lead to skin cancer. They usually occur on areas of the skin which have had long-term sun exposure, such as the scalp, face, hands, or forearms. Aldara provides an alternative treatment to having the growths removed with cryosurgery, which can be quite costly and may not remove abnormal cells on the periphery.

To treat actinic keratosis:

• The medication should be applied at bedtime and left on all night, at least 8 hours.
• Apply the cream to affected area and rub in gently until it disappears.
• Repeat treatment every 3 days for 6 to 12 weeks.

Regular doctor checkups are encouraged during treatment, even if the condition appears to be improving, to ensure it is working properly and more serious complications are not developing.

Superficial Basal Cell Carcinoma

Superficial basal cell carcinoma is the most common form of skin cancer, involving the top layer of the skin. These cancers are often removed by surgery, and surgery may be preferable if the cancer is advanced. In early stages, however, or when there are numerous tumors, Aldara is an effective alternative. Some patients also buy Aldara as an alternative to surgery when scarring is a concern.

Treatment is simple:

• Apply a thin layer of the cream over the affected area, extending to skin about 12 mm (0.5 inches) around the tumor.
• Medication should not be washed off for at least 8 hours; applying it at bedtime is ideal.
• Repeat treatment 5 times a week for 6 weeks, or as a doctor instructs.

Again regular doctor checkups are important to monitor progress. The medication is not effective on tumors that extend past the top layer of skin.

Genital Warts

Genital warts are caused by certain types of the human papillomavirus (HPV). Only about 10 percent of individuals who have the virus will develop genital warts, but those who do may experience pain, itching, and disfigurement. Note that there are other conditions which can cause similar symptoms; do not buy Aldara for use on the genital area unless genital warts have been diagnosed.

To eliminate genital warts:

• Apply a thin layer of cream to the affected area; preferably only on warts, but a small amount on skin around the warts is not a big concern.
• Do not wash medication off for at least 6 to 10 hours.
• Repeat treatment 3 days a week for up to 16 weeks; it may be stopped sooner if warts disappear.
• Do not apply internally; inside the vagina, the opening of the penis, or inside the rectum.

In most patients warts will be completely gone within three or four months of treatment, and new warts often do not appear for several additional months. The medication is not a cure, however, and will not permanently prevent the development of new warts, or prevent transmission of the virus to others. Treatment may be repeated as-needed if warts do reappear.
